5 Laundry Mistakes Almost Everyone Makes – And How to Fix Them

Have you ever forgotten to separate the whites from colored clothing while doing your laundry and ended up ruining them? This is a common laundry mistake amateurs usually make. Laundry requires attention, but some blunders are inevitable despite how careful you are.

Common Laundry Mistakes People Make

As laundry experts, we have witnessed quite a few of these blunders and have decided to compile a list of some common laundry mistakes that you can avoid.

1.     Washing Clothes Meant to be Drycleaned

Garments usually come with laundry labels instructing how to be washed or cleaned. Some clothes, especially those made of leather, suede, etc., have a ‘dry-clean only’ label to protect their fibers.

By hand-washing or machine-washing these garments, you reduce their lifespan by a lot and can even ruin them and make them unwearable. Always remember to check laundry labels before washing garments.

2.     Using Too Much Detergent

A common misconception, especially among amateurs is that the more detergent you add, the cleaner your clothes will be. However, this is not true at all. Excess detergent suds can hold dirt and get caught in areas that aren’t the easiest to rinse clean. This causes bacteria buildup.

If you’re unsatisfied with how your clothes are coming out after laundry, a good tip is to do the exact opposite of what you do – use half the amount of detergent you normally use and gradually increase the amount back to usual.

3.     Washing Shirts Buttoned Up

It might seem convenient and easy to hang laundry by washing all your shirts buttoned up, but it is stressful for buttons and button-holes. It also leads to them popping prematurely, reducing their lifespan.

It is recommended to unbutton any shirts before throwing them in the laundry to clean.

4.     Rubbing Stains Vigorously

Stains can be rather pesky and annoying to wash off, from spills to grime and grease. People often run the stain under warm water and rub it furiously to remove it. But by doing this, you’re doing from harm than good to your garment.

Rubbing a stain harshly weakens a fabric’s fibers making it more prone to wear and tear. Instead of rubbing the fabric, dab it gently from the inside out to remove the stain without causing distress to the garment.

5.      Not Treating Stains on Time

If a clothing item is dirtied from a juice spill or chocolate or soil stan, many people admit to just tossing the garment in the laundry basket instead of treating the stain straight away. This is a common mistake that can have lasting effects and even permanently stain your garment, making it unwearable.

The longer you take to treat a stain, the more difficult it is to remove. Stains are of different types and need to be removed quickly with the right product and method to ensure your garment remains as good as new.
